What am I supposed to do with all this information? I’ve stopped crying, but that sure as hell doesn’t mean I’ve stopped being sad. I’m never going back home. I’m not even human like I was before, apparently. And if I don’t pick either this guy, the real him, or some other guy, I die and murder them all.

Mishka’s smile is soft and understanding, his index finger tracing small circles on my knee. “Do you have any more questions?”

As a matter of fact, I do.

“You said take power, but what power?”

The circles stop, but he doesn’t retreat. “The power to command all Werewolves as their rightful queen. Surely, you’ve felt that already. You did so just in there, when you wiped away all my energy. And I’m no mere Alpha, my dear. You’re strong, but once you reach your full potential, you’ll be unstoppable.”

Is…that what happened? I did feel something, but it’s so weird to think of myself as anything other than completely pointless and taking up space.

“I’m not sure I’d want to be unstoppable; I just want to have a little say in my new life.”

“And so, you shall, because you’ll have the power to do so.”

“Okay. But why? Like, for what? What’s the point of any of it?”

His eyes glow a little as he continues. “You and your chosen will rule in supreme. Packs become superfluous. No more frivolous wars, or animosity, or territory disputes. Just a unified population of shifters who can finally be happy, and who will serve at your feet.”

I blink at him. It sure sounds like a good idea, but if human history has proven anything, it’s that nothing is that easy.

Aeon clears his throat and I jump. He’d been so quiet and still, I forgot about him.

“Even if she does that, sets all that into place, that’s not going to change decades, generations of hate. What if some of us don’t want to give up packs? Or if you force two rival packs together with no protections, what’s to say they don’t kill each other?”

Mishka’s smile hasn’t faltered yet, but he leans back again. “You’ll want to do whatever she commands, as if it were your lifelong desire. With the proper Werewolves around her, a powerful Beta, for example, she can, quite literally, rewrite souls, Aeon. She could take the most depraved, violent individual and fix them.”

“Or make them worse.”

Aeon voices the one thought that popped into my head, too. I feel sick. This is way, way too much power. I don’t want it. I don’t think anyone should have it.

Mishka shrugs a shoulder. “She could, but I believe Reanne to be good. She’d never do something like that. Not without reason.”

My stomach turns, and I launch to my feet. “I-I need some air.”

I tuck the towel under my arms as I stumble through the door.

It’s my first look at anything other than the inside of Cyan’s cabin, but I can’t even appreciate it. I grip my waist and press my back to the wood.
