What am I supposed to do with all this information? Iâve stopped crying, but that sure as hell doesnât mean Iâve stopped being sad. Iâm never going back home. Iâm not even human like I was before, apparently. And if I donât pick either this guy, the real him, or some other guy, I die and murder them all.
Mishkaâs smile is soft and understanding, his index finger tracing small circles on my knee. âDo you have any more questions?â
As a matter of fact, I do.
âYou said take power, but what power?â
The circles stop, but he doesnât retreat. âThe power to command all Werewolves as their rightful queen. Surely, youâve felt that already. You did so just in there, when you wiped away all my energy. And Iâm no mere Alpha, my dear. Youâre strong, but once you reach your full potential, youâll be unstoppable.â
Isâ¦that what happened? I did feel something, but itâs so weird to think of myself as anything other than completely pointless and taking up space.
âIâm not sure Iâd want to be unstoppable; I just want to have a little say in my new life.â
âAnd so, you shall, because youâll have the power to do so.â
âOkay. But why? Like, for what? Whatâs the point of any of it?â
His eyes glow a little as he continues. âYou and your chosen will rule in supreme. Packs become superfluous. No more frivolous wars, or animosity, or territory disputes. Just a unified population of shifters who can finally be happy, and who will serve at your feet.â
I blink at him. It sure sounds like a good idea, but if human history has proven anything, itâs that nothing is that easy.
Aeon clears his throat and I jump. Heâd been so quiet and still, I forgot about him.
âEven if she does that, sets all that into place, thatâs not going to change decades, generations of hate. What if some of us donât want to give up packs? Or if you force two rival packs together with no protections, whatâs to say they donât kill each other?â
Mishkaâs smile hasnât faltered yet, but he leans back again. âYouâll want to do whatever she commands, as if it were your lifelong desire. With the proper Werewolves around her, a powerful Beta, for example, she can, quite literally, rewrite souls, Aeon. She could take the most depraved, violent individual and fix them.â
âOr make them worse.â
Aeon voices the one thought that popped into my head, too. I feel sick. This is way, way too much power. I donât want it. I donât think anyone should have it.
Mishka shrugs a shoulder. âShe could, but I believe Reanne to be good. Sheâd never do something like that. Not without reason.â
My stomach turns, and I launch to my feet. âI-I need some air.â
I tuck the towel under my arms as I stumble through the door.
Itâs my first look at anything other than the inside of Cyanâs cabin, but I canât even appreciate it. I grip my waist and press my back to the wood.
